NP 159 along the Tacoma waterfront in the late 50's
Although I saw a bit of steam, I really grew up viewing diesel locomotives.  Covered
Wagons, Ft's and later models, GP-7's - 9's, and various switch engines from EMD, Alco
and Baldwin.  Photos are on the Tacoma Division from the 50's through the 70's.

NP 159 along the Tacoma waterfront in the late 50's.
Foghorns are blowing at Browns Point, across the bay and
others, the waters gently lapping on the rip-rap edged fill,
and the heavy fog smells of seaweed, with a touch of pulp
mill and Alcoa from over on the tideflats.  The moon yard is
behind the camera, and it's another great morning for train
watching.

Andersonand I had a great day of photography along the
Right of Way!  This was back in the days when you could
walk along the tracks without being harrassed.  If anybody
asked, I just said my dad works for the NP, and all was
OK.  Glacier Sand and Gravel can be seen in the
background, now a golf course.  The train is, most likely,
the Gate Local, originating in Tacoma.

NP's Portland-Seattle train No. 407 near Moon Yard Tacoma
With fisherman and seagulls in the background, the NP's
Portland-Seattle train No. 407 nears the Tacoma Union
Station, after passing through the Nelson Bennett tunnel.
Shaffer Terminal Co. Warehouse still dominates the scene,
and the spur that climbs to the upper level of Sperry Flour
Mill is the far track to the left.  My how this scene has
changed since 1953 when FB Thompson pointed his new
Rolleiflex camera west from the bridge across the moon
yard.
