NP 2010 Calendar
Northern Pacific Y class 2-8-0 locomotives were built for
heavy freight service, many as tandem compound engines.
These were, in my opinion, ugly, but interesting. From
reports, they were slow, nose heavy, and hard to maintain.
All that lasted were converted to simple engines. Some
lasted, as switch engines, until the end of steam on the NP.
NP No. 23, a Y-1 class engine, built in
1899 by Schenectady. She lasted until
5/22/58.
NP 1255 compound Class Y-2, 1st order,
Schenectady 1901, sold to SP&S 7/1/25,
became #325. Photo copied from cabinet
photo, unknown photographer and
location. I'd guess the big tandem
compound 2-8-0 is pretty new here.
NP No. 1268, class Y-2, from the 2nd
order, built by Alco in 1902, removed from
the roster on 3/6/45. Dad spent some time
in Pasco about the time this photo was
taken, so I'm guessing this is where he
grabbed this shot, just before WWII.
This and the next image are of NP 1272
near Pe Ell Washington Class Y-2, 2nd
order, Alco 1902, S 3/12/54, Northern
Pacific 2-8-0 in work train service on the
South Bend Branch. Scott Stoves and wife
in cab. This is a good view of the
ponderous tandem compound cylinders.
Both images were cabinet photos in poor
condition. Many hours were spent in their
restoration.
