NP 2600 at Centralia WA, circa 1939-41 by Frank Thompson.
This was taken just before dad went in the army, with an Argus
C-3camera, affectionately (or not), known as "The Brick".  This
was the first 4-8-4 built.

NP 2601  backs to her train a couple years before she was
retired.  The Class A 4-8-4s were the 1st Northerns built.  Note
the huge firebox to burn NP's cheap coal!  Of course, since
Portland had no coaling facilities, she was an oil burner during her
time on the Tacoma division.  Photo by Tom Miller.

NP 2602 at McCarver St. in Tacoma
NP 2602 Just after the war, the Portland train is caught by Frank
(Tommy) Thompson, along the waterfront at McCarver St. in
Tacoma.  This negative was badly damaged, possibly by being
dropped on the darkroom floor and stepped on.  As far as I
know, dad never printed it, as the sky above the engine, down to
the running boards was a mass of scratches.  Photoshop to the
rescue, I wish he'd lived to see the result.  I also colorized the
image.

NP 2608 Northern Pacific's pool train #407 from Portland
NP 2608 Northern pacific's pool train from Portland, heading
towards Seattle.  Photographed by my father, Frank
Thompson, retired Northern Pacific Conductor.  The original
was photographed with a Busch Pressman 4x5 camera.  Dad
had the fireman, a friend, smoke it up a bit, leaving the station,
frowned upon by both the Rail
road and Tacoma.  The automatic blowdown of steam, under the
cab always made dad cuss when we printed
this image in the darkroom.  It is much better handled with a high
quality scan of the negative and PhotoShop!

Northern Pacific Class A 2604 in Portland Oregon.  The huge
firebox of the NP class A engines is very apparent in this view!
Taken in 1954, probably at the head of NP's Seattle-Tacoma
train, 407-408.

and the fire was not burning well until more adjustments to draft
were made.  Photo by Frank Thompson, colorized by Stephen

The Timken with train #408 coming into the "Head of the Bay
Curve" a bit too fast.  Note brake shoe smoke along train!
Shortly, Portland bound passengers will be loading at the
Tacoma Union Station.
