Northern Pacific Audio Files
Conductor Frank Thompson recorded many cassette tapes about the various
jobs he worked on the Northern Pacific. He really made these for me, as I
loved the history, so, as you listen, remember that he's basically talking to his
son. The quality's not great, but there are some wonderful stories and a lot of
information about railroading in the 1940's-70's..
Also, there are a couple things I recorded that I'll add.
The Moclips and Markham Locals
The "P's" pop bad on this one, but some
interesting stuff.
BN (ex-NP) GP-9 crossing
Pacific Avenue in Tacoma, 1975.
The Highball, Tacoma to
Hoquiam and return.
Sound recording by Steve Thompson.
These were made with a portable cassette
recorder in 1975 and 76, so they are BN
era, but are mostly old NP jobs and
equipment.
Conductor Thompson talks about steam
era jobs on the Tacoma Division of the NP
The 680 Jobs
Starts off a little slow, but once it gets
going, there's a lot about the jobs and
personalities here. Info on the A class and
a fast run, Jock McOmbers getting even
with a GN crew, pushing a caboose onto
the sidewalk in Portland. Dad mentions
Fox Island, where we had a cabin , he
liked to spend as much time as possible out
there.
Just a couple Incidents!
Oiling around an engine at Tacoma in the
rain.
and
" Hold Her Herman, the drawbridge is
open!"

Kanaskat Local
A bit scattered at times, but well worth a
listen.
